A Sad Return to Monday–Weekend Wrap-Up {3/31/14}

How in the world is it the last day in March already?! Bring on the warm weather!

Sadly, today marks my return to the real world after a week of doing what I wanted, when I wanted, how I wanted…you get the picture. Spring Break is over, and it’s back to work for this heartbroken happy teacher. Despite the impending return to work looming over my head (ok, perhaps I’m being a bit overdramatic Winking smile), I managed to have a pretty terrific weekend!

Let’s back up to Friday. I mentioned in my that I had a haircut appointment Friday afternoon. Well, every time I go to get it cut, I end up going back and forth about should I? or shouldn’t I? go big and cut it off. Go big or go home, right? Well…

Yikes!!! But, I kinda love it, for now anyway. I figured, what the heck…it’s hair, if I hate it, it’ll grow back, so why not!?

I knew it had gotten long, but I had no idea quite, how long.

I was able to donate a good bit of my hair to Locks of Love (this organization uses real hair to provide wigs for cancer patients going through radiation and chemotherapy), which I am super excited about!

I had to laugh when I saw the take-out box. A “Buff Box”? If it works, I know what I’m ordering from now on. Winking smile  Ok, it was Buffalo Chicken Fingers. But, still. Funny, right?

Saturday started out pretty chilly and rainy around here. Nevertheless, my day began with a delicious bowl of oats and a Pilates + HIIT video via Fitness Blender <—check it out if you haven’t yet. It’s a great resource for at home workouts. There are TONS of different types of workouts for all levels, varying styles, and many “no equipment needed” routines.

John and I would up venturing out to stop by an art festival that was happening in a park downtown.


There were some cute things, but, nothing I couldn’t live without. We then had a little lunch date, followed by getting some errands out of the way. One of them included picking up some new Chaco sandals for my 15 year old brother. His feet are HUGE! I have a feeling he isn’t quite done growing yet!

We ended our night with some March Madness on the couch.

After church on Sunday, we headed out to the local tennis courts. I’ve mentioned before that John is a tennis pro. Well, I know I’m athletic enough to learn and do well at tennis, I just hate the learning part of it. I just want to be good already! Ha!

I then had to work on lesson plans and entering grades for an hour or two. Not the most fun Sunday afternoon activity, but the cute lesson plan template I found via Pinterest definitely helps some. Winking smile

The rest of the evening included getting ready for the week, a little meal prep, catching some more March Madness basketball, and watching some of our favorite shows…Amazing Race and Eric and Jessie (it’s flipping hilarious if you’ve never seen it! Comes on E! on Sunday nights).

Five Things Friday–Favorites edition

\Wow! How in the world is it Friday already?! This may be one of the only times I’m SAD it’s Friday. Spring break is over. Sad smile Ahhh….well, it had to end sometime, right? I’m just thankful I get a spring break.

Since today is Friday, I’m participating in Clare’s Five Things Friday. Head on over to Fitting It All In to check out all the fun.

I’m going to put a little twist on today’s version of Five Things Friday. Today is going to focus on 5 of my all-time favorite things. I go to thinking the other day, WHY are my favorite things my favorites? (does that make sense?) Anyway, I’m going to try to answer that question about the following items.

1. Favorite Color: Blue. So, why do I like blue? I’m not honestly sure, I always have though. For me, I think it’s more of a calming color. Blue is classified as a cool color. For me, it represents slowing down, a breath of fresh air, and just an overall peaceful color. Plus, the sky and the ocean are blue – and I like those things too. Winking smile

2. Favorite new meal/recipe: this Healthy Avocado Chicken Salad – You guys….this is SO good! I saw it on pinterest yesterday, and couldn’t seem to get it out of my head all.day.long. So, what did I do? I took care of that little craving. I drove myself to the grocery store, picked up the necessary ingredients, and made myself some dinner.

3. Favorite Restaurant: Zoe’s KitchenI LOVE Zoe’s! Just ask my husband. Winking smile Why do I like it so much? I think because all the ingredients they use are fresh! They do not serve foods that is fried – not that I’m against fried foods, however, they tend to make me feel greasy and don’t sit well with my tummy. As someone who has never liked mayo, I love the fact that not many of their foods are prepared with mayonnaise. They’ll put it on your sandwich if you’d like, but as far as in their slaw or potato salad, they are both vinegar based. They do use mayo in their famous chicken salad, but it’s not overdone.

If you have a Zoe’s near you, and you’ve never tired it, shame on you! You must go today.

Why do I enjoy these things? I think they allow me to get outside of my mind for a bit. What I mean by that is, they allow me to focus on other things and take my attention away from the worries, anxieties, and/or demands of the day. Overall, they help me to relax and focus on what is really important in life – God, my marriage, family, relationships. Priorities, people.

5. Favorite way to spoil myself: pedicure!! Ahh…on a Friday afternoon, after a long week of chasing 3rd graders and forcing knowledge down their throats (kindding! sorta…) nothing beats a pedicure. Unfortunately, I don’t have an unlimited pedicure fund, however if you’re willing to start one for me, I won’t say no.

Why do I like pedicures? I love the massage chair! I know, right?! I love the warm water. I like the mini leg/calf massage. And I like pretty spring/summer colors. I’ve never been one who felt I could pull off a dark color on my toes. It just makes my feet look dirty. But, kudos to those of you who can!

On that note, I’d better scoot! I have a hair cut appointment this morning. My hair needs cutting like nobody’s business! Yikes! I’m contemplating getting lots cut off. I probably won’t though. I always think about it, but never have the guts to go through with it. I’m scared of buyers remorse (haircut remorse?).

Thinking Out Loud {3/27/14}

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve participated in Amanda’s Thinking Out Loud. Since I’ve got lots of randomness on my mind, I’m joining in again today.


1. Don’t you just love family time? My mom, one of my sisters, and one of my brothers drove down for the day yesterday, and I just love spending time with them. We have so much fun together and constantly keep each other laughing.

2. Sometimes, I just hate the fact that I have such a hard time letting go of control and just living. Do you ever struggle with this? I know it would make life so much easier if I’d just lighten up and let go sometimes. I’m oh-so-much better than I used to be, but I’m definitely still working on it. #lifeisforliving (my family thinks it’s hilarious to add random hashtags to our conversations…)

3. My little brother is no longer little. He’s officially taller than me – by a lot. And he’s pretty cute too, ladies…if anyone is looking for a sweet, generous, super-fun 15 year-old. Winking smile

4. Speaking of my baby brother, he ended up spending the night with us last night! He’s so fun and we love having him around. My sister and mom had to go back to Birmingham. I asked Jake if he wanted to stay, and of course he said yes. I am his favorite sister, after all. My husband turns into a little boy when he’s around. They spend the whole evening playing video games, looking up cheats, and discussing deep issues like how to outrun the police.

5. I am OBSESSED with the china cabinet we refinished yesterday! I mentioned that my mom had bought it for me, and she was coming down to help me paint and re-do it. It turned out SO well! Here’s a sneak peak…

6. I’ve mentioned it before, but is it weird that I have a Pinterest board entitled “When I plan my sisters’ weddings”? I find so many beautiful things and ideas that I love! And since I clearly can’t use them, they’ll get to benefit. Smile

7. On that note, is anyone else glad they didn’t have Pinterest around when they got married? I had a hard enough time making decisions…I’d never have been able to decide on anything if I had Pinterest at my disposal! Heck, it’s hard enough now to decide on a recipe I want to make or a workout I want to do!

Some places we’ve talked about…Charleston, SC or Savannah, GA, Disney World, Las Vegas, New York City, a cruise (possibly). I’d love to hear from you! Spring Break WIAW

Good morning friends! It is a beautiful day here today, just cold. Boo! I can’t believe it’s the last week in March and we had freezing temps last night. I know lots of you up north even got snow. I am SO ready for warmer weather to be here to stay!

Since today is Wednesday, that means it’s time for What I ate Wednesday Tuesday. (Thanks Jenn for hosting!) Y’all, let me be honest for a second, I’m horrible at remembering to take pictures of my meals. I have good intentions, but I must just get too excited about digging in and chowing down. Ah well…maybe one of these days… Winking smile

Breakfast – 8:15am

Breakfast was a bowl of oats, topped with peanut butter and strawberries. Boring, maybe. Delicious, definitely!

After my food settled, I did this workout from Danica. It’s a good one!

I also completed a 35 minute pilates and cardio workout via fitnessblender.com. Fitness Blender is a GREAT resource for at-home workouts. Most of them require little to no equipment. Perfect for someone like me who doesn’t have a gym membership and relies on home workouts.

Lunch 12:40 pm

Lunch was an open faced whole wheat bagel. I topped it with regular hummus, turkey, lettuce, and tomato slices – with lots of salt and peppa! I served it with mini triscuits (why are bite sized foods so much better? ) and a dark chocolate and oatmeal cookie for dessert.

Following lunch, I had the itch to get out of the house. I didn’t really have any intention of buying anything, but just wanted to get out and walk around. One of my favorite places to browse is TJ Maxx. Well, wouldn’t ya know I found some things I just couldn’t live without (catch my sarcasm there?).

I fell in LOVE with these throw pillows for our couch. I’ve had my eye out for some new pillows for a while now, and when I saw these, I knew I couldn’t pass them up! I love how they turned out!

Following my snack, I had the itch to do some baking. My go-to when I want to bake, but don’t want to make a huge mess in the kitchen? Homemade chocolate chip cookies. So simple, yet so delicious. They’re John’s absolute favorite and the guys at his office love them too, so I knew I’d have no problem finding something to do with them. The 2 of us have a hard time polishing off 4 dozen cookies. Winking smile

Dinner 7:45 pm

I tried a new recipe last night for dinner. How delicious does this sound…Pizza-esque Tomato Basil Quinoa Casserole?! Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, I didn’t take any pictures. However, I will hook you up with some pictures from feastie.com’s website. This dish was seriously delicious.


While I didn’t snap a picture of the finished dish, I DID get a picture of these ridiculously huge grape tomatoes. Have you ever seen such?!

I also had a side salad topped with feta cheese, crushed almonds, and Newman’s Own balsamic vinaigrette.

Snack 9:20 pm

I had a handful of Publix’s Cranberry Nut Organic trail mix for a snack. Delicious!

On today’s agenda…

My mom and sister are driving down for the day. We’re going to re-do and makeover a china cabinet/hutch that my mom found for super cheap. I’m SO excited! I found a few pictures on pinterest that I like! I’m hoping ours will turn out something like these.

Do You Set Unrealistic Expectations?

Today marks the 2nd day of my spring break, and it has been lovely so far. Waking up at 7am vs. 5am, leisurely eating breakfast while watching the Today Show and catching up on blog reading, taking time for devotions, and having the time to get in a quality workout…just some of the things I’ve enjoyed. Looking forward to 3 more days. Woo!

Yesterday wound up being a busy and productive day. I was able to get the whole house cleaned! Yes, it took a while, but it feels AWESOME! I love having the time to really clean each room like it needs to be cleaned. It doesn’t happen nearly enough around here.

I was also able to get the grocery shopping done for the week and made a trip to Academy Sports for a few new items. I treated myself to new spandex capri bottoms and a new lightweight sweatshirt. (<—head over to Becky’s blog for more ideas of how to Treat Yourself.)

I own a pair of Nike and Reebok running tights, which were both bought on sale. I just can’t swallow spending upwards of $40 for clothes I’m going to get all sweaty in. Winking smile But, this pair is the BCG brand that Academy carries. Typically I don’t like this brand too much because the items usually feel more cheaply made and don’t usually fit as well. But I love these spandex capri bottoms! The fit really well and seem to be very good quality. And at $16 a pair, I have a feeling I’ll definitely be back to grab a few more pairs.

Let’s chat for a moment about Expectations.

In general, I believe having and setting expectations is a good thing. Having expectations for yourself can help push you through challenges and achieve your goals. Having expectations for others is also generally a good thing. For example, I think it’s good to have a set of expectations for your significant other. You may expect certain things from him/her – things like treating you with respect, listening to you, helping you, and having a similar set of beliefs, values, and morals.

But today, I want to discuss expectations we set for ourselves.

let go of expectations

Being someone with a perfectionist mentality (recovering perfectionist?), I tend to set unrealistic expectations for myself, and then push myself to achieve them. While there is nothing wrong with pushing yourself, I usually take it to the extreme and end up unnecessarily exhausted, stressed, and anxious. This is no fun for anyone. I tend to think that I’m only hurting myself, which, sadly, doesn’t phase me very much. But, this isn’t the case. I’m also affecting those around me. I’m moody, grumpy, and sometimes downright mean.

But, y’all, we deserve a break. I’m not perfect, and neither are you. And you know what? No one expects you to be perfect. In fact, by trying to be perfect, we sometimes push others away. Who wants to be friends or spend time with someone who is perfect – eats perfectly, always has everything organized, turned in on time, is neat, and gets in a sweaty workout everyday? Uhhh….not me.

In fact, NO ONE expects you to be perfect – except you!

A really good self reminder from a self confessed 'perfectionist' - those expectations are the only true disappointment.   Where in your life are you expectations trapping you?  PRESENT MOMENT, only way forward... x

As I said earlier, I DO think setting expectations, generally, is a good thing. But the kind of expectations I’m talking about are not tangibly measurable. The expectations I’m speaking of are things like doing YOUR best everyday in every task, treating others with respect, and finding joy in every circumstance. I’m slowly learning to change my expectations from things like get all the laundry done, all food prepped, a perfect meal on the table, perfect lesson plans, a perfectly cleaned house, and so on, and so on, to things like I mentioned above.

Let go of expectations.  They only serve to disappointment us.  Accepting what is lets us be in the flow of life and not get trapped in trying to control things or people.  Fear causes us to want to control.  Let go of fear too. <3

In my experience, once I let go of those strict and unrealistic expectations of myself, I am happier. I’m not constantly disappointing myself for not reaching those expectations, and I don’t constantly feel pressure to be achieving these crazy high goals. I’m more rested, less stressed out, and less anxious. I’m definitely more relatable and someone others are more likely to want to be around.

So, I challenge you today – let go of those unrealistic expectations you have.

Side Note: only YOU know if expectations are unrealistic for YOU. They may not be unrealistic for someone else, but for YOU they are. You are unique, honor YOU!

And set expectations for yourself that are really going to have an impact on you and those around you in a positive way.

Weekend Wrap-Up {3/24/13}

If you’re reading this on Monday, I’m officially on SPRING BREAK! Woop! We aren’t going anywhere this year for spring break, and that’s a-okay by me. I’m really looking forward to lying low, getting the house clean and in order, getting a few projects done, and just enjoying having no schedule to follow or obligations to take care of.

Backing up to this weekend…it was a pretty great one! On Saturday, John and I took care of a project in our backyard that we’ve been talking about for a few weeks now. We first went to Lowes to stock up on all the supplies we’d need. Then we got busy!

We wanted to build a raised bed on the back of our patio. We are BEYOND happy with how it turned out! It really wasn’t difficult to do at all, and only took us a few hours, start to finish.

Sunday, we headed to early church and Sunday school, as usual. Following church, we had plans for grabbing lunch on our way to one of the cutest neighborhoods! This neighborhood is located about 20 minutes from where we currently live. And although we have no plans of buying a home there and moving in the near future, I’d love to live there one day! The whole community is adorable, and the houses are to die for!


We had so much fun walking around and dreaming about the “what ifs…” and  “One days…” After we had our fill of adorable-ness, we ran in a few of the stores that are nearby. Ann Taylor Loft (one of my all time favorites!) was having a good sale, as was New York and Company. While I did see some spring pieces that I liked, I didn’t fall in love enough to buy anything. But, I have a feeling I’ll be making some spring wardrobe purchases soon!

The rest of Sunday evening was spent trying fix my computer. Sadly, it’s not charging…AGAIN! This happened about 2 weeks ago. My mom kindly offered to take it in for me – she works part-time at the Apple store (there are only 2 in Alabama- one being in Birmingham, about an hour and 15 mins. from where John and I live). I got it back this past Wednesday, and Saturday evening, it stopped charging again. Sad day! Sad smile

My mom’s going to take it in for me again. But, I don’t know when I’ll be getting it back. She is coming down to visit for the day on Wednesday, so I’m afraid it may be a while by the time she takes it in, they diagnose and fix the problem, and I can meet her again to get my computer back.

Fortunately though, I have a computer that is “mine” at school. It’s a Dell laptop that I can basically use as mine; I’m just responsible and liable for it. So, I was back up at school bright and early this morning (yes, on spring break!) to grab my laptop. I am very thankful, though, l that I have another computer at my disposal to use.

This Monday morning began marvelously! I slept in (7:20!), had breakfast, did a sweaty and challenging Nike Fitness Club workout (you should check this app out if you haven’t already! It’s free from the Apple App Store), cleaned the kitchen, master bedroom, and bathrooms…all before lunch! I don’t know about you, but if the house is a wreck, I just can’t enjoy doing leisurely activities. I love a clean house!

I’m not sure exactly what the afternoon holds, but I do know it MUST include a trip to the grocery store, seeing we’re out of just about all the essentials. Yikes!

What’s in my Fridge and Pantry {WIAW 3/19/14}

Happy Hump Day!

Today, I’m going to put a little twist on WIAW. Since my meals – especially breakfast, lunch, and snacks – are relatively the same on weekdays, I didn’t want to bore you. So, today is going to be “What’s in My Fridge and Pantry Wednesday.” Smile

Please excuse the messiness you’re about to witness. But come on, who’s refrigerator is neat 100% of the time? Definitely not mine!

First up… lots of strawberries (can you say sale?), the husbands gatorade, and all his left over salsas from when he picked up Moe’s the other night. Think he went a little overboard?! Ha!

Next up, some eggs…side note – my mom gave me that cute egg holder and I LOVE it! I like that I can see how many eggs I have left. We’ve also got some defrosted chicken tenderloins and the husband’s breakfast that the can grab, heat up, and go in the mornings (egg and bacon biscuits).

So, my husband drinks soft drinks. It looks like he drinks them all the time. In reality, he probably does have 1 a day. BUT, you know what, we all have our “unhealthy” habits. Coffee all.the.time. anyone?

In the door we’ve got some milk, lots of condiments, and my Crystal Light mix. I love drinking this stuff! Like I said, we all have our habits that aren’t the healthiest.

Moving onto the Pantry…

Here’s the good stuff…oats, sweet potatoes, whole wheat bagels, trail mix, peanut butter, and a box of Luna bars hiding in the back.

We’ve also got some whole wheat pasta, grits, and store brand Bisquick.

And finally, some canned goods such as chicken broth, soup that the husband bought one day and has never eaten (gotta love lugging him to the grocery store!), some break crumbs hiding back there, and my favorite Kashi dark chocolate and oats cookies.

While it’s always fun to peek inside the lives of others (or is that just me? Winking smile), my purpose for sharing what’s in my fridge and pantry is to show that we’re not all perfect. I don’t eat 100% clean 100% of the time, nor do I claim to. I do what I can, budget, and time allowing.

There are some days when no matter how well I plan or how much I try, a home-cooked meal prepared with fresh, local veggies and organic meat just isn’t going to happen because I’m tired, something else came up, etc. There are also budgetary constraints. Let’s be real…it can be expensive to eat “healthy.” And by healthy I mean, generally eating lots of fruits, veggies, whole wheat breads, and those types of things. It’s much cheaper to buy the foods full of preservatives and other manufactured ingredients. While I TRY to stay away from these things most of the time, sometimes my budget just doesn’t allow wiggle room. So, at times, I do go with, for example, the pre-packaged frozen meats. And you know what, that’s ok. Boy, I’d hate to look back at some of the things I ate growing up! I survived then, and I think I’ll be fine now too. 

And you know what? Sometimes, dad-gum-it, a can of soup (FULL preservatives, sodium, and all that good stuff) and a piece of buttered WHITE toast is totally where it’s at and what my taste buds want. And, there’s nothing wrong with that! As with everything, it’s all about moderation! I do what I can for my health and the health of my husband, and don’t “sweat the small stuff.”
